Welcome to the
website of Toxteth Tabernacle !
It is hoped that your visit to our web site will prove
both useful and educational, as we are keen to ensure that everyone
who has an interest in the well-being of the South Liverpool area also
possess
an awareness of the work we are undertaking on behalf of those who use
the Tabernacle.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::
One of the biggest issues facing the Church in the
urban scene is the flight of Christians from the centre.
It’s
reasonably natural and understandable to want to live in a nice house
and a safe neighbourhood, relatively free from endless graffiti, dirt
and rubbish. A place were drugs, crime and violence do not dominate
local culture.
Yet it was
those who chose, often amidst great personal sacrifice and loss, to
make that move into the inner city that modelled real ‘incarnation’.
Richard and
Alison Steele. Anne and Bill Bass, followed through the years by
others, have often paid the price for being in Toxteth. The cost for
many was theft, break-ins, car loss, broken windows, stones, eggs and
sometimes personal attack. Their modelling of incarnation paved the
way for others to follow so that today a good proportion of the church
live in the stigmatised L8 postcode.
Their stories
are ones of faith and struggle, pain and joy, triumph and defeat, but
without such moves the church in the city could not survive as a
credible and effective witness to its local people.
This website has been developed to
provide visitors with an insight into the past history of the
Tabernacle, the achievements of everybody who has participated in its
growth, the services we are presently providing to the local community
and plans we have for the future.
The management, volunteers and
staff at Toxteth Tabernacle also extend to you an invitation to visit
the building and meet it's people. We guarantee you a very warm
welcome !
Finally, may we thank you once
again for visiting our website, and please do
contact us if you require any further information.
